박여숙 화랑은 1983년 당시 문화의 불모지나 다름없던 강남에 자리를 잡았다. 자신의 이름에 부끄럽지 않도록 최선을 다하겠다는 뜻에서 당시로서는 드물게 대표 본인의 이름을 따서 화랑명을 지었다.

당시 박여숙 대표는 근현대 작가 위주의 화랑 경영에서 탈피하기 위하여 젊고 역량 있는 작가들의 발굴에 힘쓰는 한편, 미술품의 대중화를 위해서 미술품의 카드 할부 판매 등 당시로서는 매우 획기적인 경영 방침을 내세워 세인의 주목을 받았다.

2021년으로 개관 38주년을 맞은 박여숙 화랑의 기획전과 기획 초대전은 언제나 좋은 평가를 받고 있으며, 한국 현대 미술 발전에 큰 역할을 하고 있다.

전통적인 모티브를 간직하면서도 세련되고 깊이 있는 현대적인 작품들을 언제나 박여숙 화랑에서 만날 수 있다. 한국미술을 이끌어가는 국내 주요 작가들 뿐 아니라 크리스토, 패트릭 휴즈, 제니퍼 바틀렛, 프레 일겐, 프랭크 스텔라, 나이젤 홀, 해리 게리츠, 이고르 미토라이, 우고 리바, 반지, 피후안 등 해외의 세계적인 대가의 수준 있는 전시회를 개최해서 한국 미술계에 신선한 자극을 마련해 왔다.

 

국내에서의 활발한 전시 활동과 더불어 박여숙 화랑은 1991년 부터 10여년 동안 꾸준히 LA아트 페어, 아트 팜 비치, NICAF, 아트 마이애미, 아트 시카고, 바젤 아트 페어, 쾰른 아트 페어, 샌프란시스코 아트 페어, FIAC, 멜버른 아트 페어, 바젤 마이애미 등과 같은 세계 유수 아트 페어에 30여회 참여하여 한국 작가들을 국외에 소개하는 데 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 박여숙 화랑의 해외 아트 페어에서의 선전은 국내의 척박한 미술 시장을 탈피하여 새로운 시장을 개척한다는 의미 외에도 우리 미술을 전세계의 미술 애호가들에게 선보인다는 적극적인 의미도 가지고 있다.  해외 아트 페어를 통해서 우리 작가들은 세계의 미술관과 화랑으로부터 초청 받는 등 세계 무대로 진출할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 갖게 된다. 또한 세계 미술계의 현장에서 갈고 닦은 감각은 한국 미술을 바라보는 눈을 한 차원 더 높일 수 있다.

Founded in 1983, Park Ryu Sook Gallery first opened its door in Gangnam area which at the time was a deserted area for art. Since then, the gallery has acted as a leader and largely contributed to its development as the hub for the contemporary art scene in Korea. 

With an ambitious goal of leading the contemporary art scene in both Korea and the world, the gallery has focused on introducing progressive contemporary art to both domestic and international market.  

Consequently the gallery has been committed to promoting Korean contemporary art in overseas by participating in prestigious international art fairs including Art Basel, Art Cologne, Art Chicago, SH Contemporary and more. The gallery also has been introducing leading international artists to domestic audiences, providing opportunities to observe the current development in contemporary art world.

In continuing its endeavor for distinguished prominence in the international art scene, the gallery opened its Shanghai branch in 2008. Park Ryu Sook Gallery continues to present high quality contemporary art not only from Asia but also from Europe and America. Artists represented range from talented emerging artists such as Yim Man-Hyeok and Kwon Kisoo to internationally renowned artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude and Patrick Hughes.
